Applying for Dutch citizenship

If you wish to apply for Dutch citizenship, there are three possible routes: automatically by birth or acknowledgment, through the option procedure, or via naturalization. This page outlines the most suitable path for your situation, the duration of each process, and the associated costs.

Death

A death should be registered in the city where the person has died. Most of the time the undertaker takes care of this, but you can also do this yourself.

Divorce

You can submit a request for a divorce or a dissolution of a registered partnership at the court.

Marriage or registered partnership

Do you have plans to get married or register a partnership? Congratulations! Getting married in Helmond is possible everywhere, at any time and by whomever you want.

Passport, ID Card

A passport or identity card (ID card) is an official travel and identity document. Everyone aged 14 and older must be able to show valid identification. In healthcare, identification is required from birth, and in public transport from the age of 12.

Register a birth

Have you recently had a baby? Congratulations! You must register the birth within 3 working days at the municipality where your child was born. If the third day falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or public holiday, you may register the birth on the next working day.

Registration in the Netherlands (BRP)

If you are moving to the Netherlands, you must register with a municipality. This applies if you plan to stay in the Netherlands for at least 4 months within a 6-month period.
