Residence tax for migrant workers not registered in the BRP
Are you temporarily staying in Helmond and not registered in the Personal Records Database (BRP)? If so, your landlord must pay residence tax for you. Your landlord may charge with these costs.
What is residence tax?
The municipality uses this tax to pay for local services such as:
- Roads and green space maintenance;
- City cleaning;
- Sports facilities.
How much does residence tax cost?
In 2026, the landlord pays €4.50 per person per overnight stay. Your landlord may charge you with these costs.
Registered in the BRP? Then you do not pay residence tax
If you are registered in the BRP:
- Your landlord may no longer charge you residence tax;
- You pay less tax: you only pay the local taxes with a much lower fee;
- You have the same rights as other residents of Helmond.
You may also build rights such as:
- Old‑age pension (AOW);
- Healthcare allowance;
- Unemployment or social assistance benefits (if applicable).
When should you register?
If you stay in the Netherlands longer than 4 months, you are required to register in the BRP.
How to register
- Make an appointment with the Municipality of Helmond by calling 14 0492.
- All persons to be registered (including children) must be present in person.
Staying in the Netherlands less than 4 months?
If your stay is shorter than 4 months, you cannot register in the BRP. In that case, you should register at an RNI desk (Non‑Residents Registration). You can do this via Nederlandwereldwijd.nl. Please note: your landlord can still charge you the residence tax.
