Research carried out by the Aa en Maas Water Board has shown that the substance PFOA (more or less the predecessor of GenX) has been found in the Berkendonk swimming water.
Swimming in Berkendonk remains permitted. Incidental exposure (such as swimming) does not involve direct risks to public health. This is confirmed by the RIVM, as well as that the environment in and around Berkendonk is not yet at risk. However, the RIVM warns (for example on its website) for a long-term high exposure to PFOA. This may possibly pose health risks.
